This case study describes the use of a viscosity building, cost effective, liquid and easy to use Cationic Rapid Set (CRS) emulsifier (Redicote® C-580 by Nouryon) for a successful chip seal application.
Chip seals and surface dressings
Chip seal or surface dressing is one of the most prevalent surface treatment/preventive maintenance treatment using emulsions. The rapid set emulsions such as CRS-2 (Type 2 Cationic Rapid Set emulsion as specified in standard ASTM D2397 / D2397M) or CRS-2M, which is the polymer modified version of CRS-2, need to have a certain higher viscosity to meet the specifications for this application. This viscosity specification is harder to meet with certain asphalt binders especially during recent times when properties of asphalt binder are changing. In order to meet this viscosity specification emulsion producer needs to use a higher binder content in the emulsion which adds significant cost. Over the years, a few viscosity building CRS emulsifiers have been introduced for this application but still there was a need for liquid easy to use product that builds viscosity. In April 2021, Nouryon launched Redicote® C-580 which is a cost effective, liquid easy to use CRS emulsifiers.
